Overview of Civil Society Protests

Oxford In Search of History notes: “Between the 1950’s and the 1970’s large protest movements against social injustice were held. The protests were organised by ordinary members of the public (i.e. Civil society). Although the protests varied in their goals and methods, they all showed the Governments that public opinion mattered  and could bring about significant changes.”

Timeline.

  • 1954 – US supreme court ruling against segregated schools
  • 1955 – Montgomery Bus Boycott
  • 1956 – Woman’s anti – pass march to Pretoria; US supreme court ruling against segregated buses.
  • 1957 – Court ruling on desegregation of Little Rock High School Arkansas.
  • 1958 –  Formation of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament
  • 1960 –  Start of ‘sit – in’ protests by Civil Rights Protesters
  • 1963 – Civil Rights March in Washington DC; Birmingham Campaign
  • 1965 – Voting Rights act in the USA; Selma to Montgomery march; Riots in Watts, Los Angeles; Assassination of Malcolm X
  • 1966 – Formation of the National organisation for woman; Formation of the Black Panthers
  • 1967 – Riots in many US cities (Detroit, Newark)
  • 1968 – Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr; student protests in Paris
  • 1970 – Shootings of anti – Vietnam war protesters at Kent State University in US
