The Crisis of Apartheid in the 1980’s

“Although Historians see the Soweto uprising as the year in which the tide began to turn against the National Party Government, the 1980’s was the crucial turning point. At the beginning of the 1980’s, the ANC and other opposition parties were in exile, political leaders were in jail, and the government seemed to have enough power and military force to maintain control. However by the mid-1980’s, it was clear that the apartheid government was facing a crisis. by the end of the decade, wide-ranging internal resistance and international had set the scene for the collapse of apartheid.” (Oxford in search of History Grade 12 Pg. 170)
